Author Guidelines

As of January 2009, all submissions to Women and Language should be electronically submitted at www.womenandlanguage.org. Manuscripts should be in MSWord compatible format. Preferred length for scholarly research and theory manuscripts is 7,500 words including endnotes and references; a 150-word abstract should accompany such submissions. Other types of submissions such as commentaries, essays, and poetry are welcome and these may be shorter. Prepare materials with a separate cover page with no author identification on the manuscript itself; otherwise, submissions should adhere to the 5th edition of the American Psychological Association (APA) Publication Manual for format and reference style. Editor Patty Sotirin may be contacted at pjsotiri@mtu.edu.

Media/Digital Media Reviews

Women and Language publishes brief (750 words) reviews of current media and digital resources relevant to the study and teaching of communication, language, and gender. Appropriate subjects might include:
Academic and research websites
Academic and research blogs and vlogs
Digital performance scholarship
Educational or documentary films or audio programs
Multimedia productions
Research software
Scholarly databases
Our aim is to both alert W&L readers to the existence and value of these resources and to provide commentary on digital developments and directions that might enhance academic practices and understandings in the study and teaching of communication, language, and gender.

Submissions: An electronic file of the review should be sent to Editor Patty Sotirin at pjsotiri@mtu.edu.

Length: Reviews should be approximately 750 words, unless the editor has authorized a longer review or has requested a review essay.

Style: Each review should be headed by complete bibliographic information following APA Guidelines.

Please address questions to Editor Patty Sotirin at pjsotiri@mtu.edu.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The submission file is in Microsoft Word or RTF document file format.
  3. The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  4. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  5. If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
