Black, Blue and Loved All Over: Revolutionary Love, "Seven" and the Ritual of Spoken Solidarity

Rachel N Hastings

Abstract

This essay suggests a performative ethic of revolutionary love expressed through pathos-driven analyses of Black (hetero)sexual beliefs and practices. It examines the continuities of gender and sexual dynamics
operating within Black consciousness from the tradition of uppity blues, female revolutionary poets and contemporary hip hop, drama, and spoken word genres. Additionally, it articulates the use of ethnographic
dramaturgy as a performative writing method used in the poetic creation of the performance script "Seven."
