Trapped in the Closet: Understanding Contemporary Relationships in the African-American Hip Hop Community

Cassandra Chaney

Abstract

Hip hop music videos have greatly contributed toward the mass appeal of this musical genre. However, few studies have addressed how language in hip hop is used to portray intimacy and commitment between Black men and women. To address this paucity, a content analysis was conducted on Chapters 1-5 of R&B Artist R. Kelly's Trapped in the Closet. Qualitative coding and analysis of the chapters resulted in four major delineated
themes: (1) Marital Infidelity, (2) The Secret Revealed, (3) Homosexuality and The Black Church, and (4) Marital Distrust. Supporting qualitative data are presented in connection with each theme.
